History
1980 -1997: Jan was employed by the Department of Justice as a state prosecutor in the Magistrate’s, Regional and High Court, Cape Town. He resigned in 1997 as Senior State Advocate.
1997 - 2005: Jan practised as an advocate at the Cape Bar, specialising in criminal and labour law.
2005 - 2016: During this time period, Jan has stepped down as member of the Cape Bar and has since worked in private practice as a labour law consultant.

Jan was admitted as an advocate of the High Court on 26 August 1981. During his career he successfully completed the Arbitration Skills Course (gaining this qualification on 13 October 2000), thereby qualifying for selection as an Arbitrator at the Arbitration Forum.
During the period that he practised as an advocate at the Cape Bar, Jan also sat as a Regional Court Magistrate in the Cape Town Regional Court for a period of 5 years on a contract basis.
